The importance of education for equality
Educating for equality provides benefits at both an individual and social level, as it helps to develop respect, tolerance, dialogue and conflict resolution.
Education for equality is the fourth of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It contemplates “ensuring inclusive, equitable, quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.” This includes equal access for men and women to quality training, but also guarantees education for vulnerable people, such as children in situations of social exclusion, people with disabilities or indigenous peoples.
It is a fundamental issue at the educational level to prevent situations of discrimination or inequality from occurring due to sex, culture or social condition. For there to be a practice of equal education, the following aspects must exist:
- The students, teachers and, in general, the educational model or school curriculum itself, must be part of equality education as a whole.
- The inclusion of education in values such as tolerance, equality, dialogue and practical conflict resolution is required, also focusing on other spaces and social agents on which action must be taken beyond the educational center.
- The main objective is aimed at transforming relationships between men and women.
- Educate with a clear basis in facing conflicts in a peaceful and dialoguing way.
- Education for equality must be implemented by different social actors, such as governments, institutions, schools or study centers, sports clubs, teachers, parents, family members or students.
Types of education for equality
The egalitarian approach must be present in different areas to ensure that all students receive the same treatment and distributive justice is achieved. The ultimate goal would be for all students to have access to the same opportunities. In this case, the areas of education for equality are classified as follows:
- Education in gender equality. It is about educating and incorporating into the educational curriculum values focused on respect, dialogue and tolerance, to preserve coexistence between people of different genders.
- Education in equal opportunities. Promote options of all types of training for all children, thus giving them options to choose from.
- Education on equal terms. Adapt the educational system ensuring that they are adequate and adapt to any student needs.
- Education in social equality. Education for equality must prevent the student's socioeconomic situation from influencing their educational progress.
Benefits of education for equality
- The advantages of promoting education for equality are mainly represented in the boys and girls who receive it, growing up free of prejudices. In addition, more benefits are collected:
- Ability to achieve a more just society.
- Educating for equality allows access to education to be available to everyone, thereby increasing the number of people who improve their quality of life and well-being.
- Students manage to be more respectful, exercising healthier relationships based on mutual respect and responsibility.
- It guarantees the same opportunities and rights to any person, regardless of their situation and covering their needs.
- It promotes critical attitudes, through which students react to any discriminatory message against another peer.
These benefits justify the importance of implementing education for equality, since its consequences are not only reflected in the students but also in society, making it more fair.
